Rhys Millen to Bring Hyundai WRC Car Back!

In case you have not heard yet, Rhys unfortunately had some transmission trouble, and that combined with a bit of bad luck unfortunately meant that Rhys didn't get the result he wanted at Pikes Peak earlier this summer; An Unlimited World Record (and breaking the previously considered impossible; 10 minute barrier). He did however, finish 3RD overall, with a time of 11:06.2.

Rhys will bring the 500 HP mammoth to New Jersey Motorsports Park on October 2ND and 3RD, and then again November 6TH and 7TH. Hyundai wants to use the rally-cross event to prove the performance and power of the Hyundai brand, and their goal is to run the full series next year.
Rally-cross (while similar) is slightly different to traditional rally. Rally-cross takes place on a small circuit with multiple (in this case, 5) cars racing at once. The circuits traditionally are inspired by rally elements such as jumps, sharp turns, changing surfaces and unpredictability.

At this Rally-cross event, Rhys will be racing Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra in their Subaru WRX STIs, Ken Block in his Ford Fiesta and Antoine L'Estage in his Mitsubishi Lance EVO X. Our Accent is more than capable of running with these big dogs, due in no small part to its turbocharged motor, Xtrac full 4wd system, huge 13.5 inch Brembo brakes and breath taking 18 inch Enkei alloy rims.

History of Hyundai - Humble Beginning

The long and colourful story of the Hyundai Auto Group dates back to a post World War II Korea, when a 31 year old Ju-Yung Chung founded Hyundai Auto Service in Seoul, Korea. He made a modest living repairing vehicles for several years until 1968 when him and his youngest brother, Se-Yung Chung, approached the Ford Motor Company to assemble the Ford Cortina for the Korean market.

Together they entered into a contract with Ford, and founded the Hyundai Auto Group. They began construction on the now massive Ulsan Production

Plant. Production was completed in a record breaking six months. It is of note that this was the fastest time it had ever taken from ground break to commercial production of any of Ford's 118 plants. For 8 years the Ulsan plant pumped out an average of 4 cars an hour until their contract with Ford expired in 1976.

Hyundai's Ulsan plant is currently the largest manufacturing plant in the world, directly employing 34 THOUSAND people and producing 1.6 MILLION vehicles per year.

Back to our history, this mutually beneficial agreement gave Hyundai many things that would benefit them for years to come.

After getting his feet wet working with Ford, Chung collaborated with another famous company; Mitsubishi to develop its first indigenous model, The Hyundai Pony. In 1976, featuring a Mitsubishi drive train, The Pony was unleashed upon the world.

The Pony was so successful that while Hyundai Motor Company only expected around 5,000 models to be sold in Canada in 1984, it sold more than 10 times that number.

Using the knowledge that Hyundai had gained from developing the Pony, they set to work on a replacement for the compact sedan Cortina that they had sold in the past. In 1983 the Hyundai Stellar was realised. Using the familiar Cortina chassis but a redesigned Italian sculpted body enabled Hyundai to offer a familiar and proven product, with improvements like power windows and locks, as well as air conditioning. Features usually reserved for top of the line models at that time.

The Stellar, while a success in its own right, was not able to be exported to the American market. It was a Canadian only model, but proved to be really popular among the Canadians as well as in several South American countries.

It was not until the 1985 Excel (the replacement for the Pony) that Hyundai was able to break into the US auto market. It couldn't have come at a better time. With a sticker price of less than $5000, and a lengthy list of features; Forbes magazine named in one of the top ten products of the year and sold an unprecedented 126,000 vehicles and was the best selling import vehicle of 1985, outselling such classics as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Expanding further and anxious to switch to a full in house design, the 1989 Hyundai Sonata was our first entirely independently developed and manufactured chassis produced in two brand new plants (Asan, Korea and Bromont, QC).

This period of growth was unprecedented as in relatively no time Hyundai exploded to a full fledged auto mobile line up with the introduction of the Scoupe as well in 1989.

The Accent (our current entry level model) was born in 1995 and it swept the world over. In Australia is considered to be one of the most popular import vehicles of all time, due to the market share that it captured in its first year (roughly 5.5% of the entire Australian market)

It replaced the aging Excel and once again brought Hyundai to the forefront of economically priced vehicles, keeping with Hyundai's tradition of aggressively attacking the marketplace with fantastic vehicles at competitive prices. Since the Excel was no longer, a replacement for the Scoupe in the Hyundai Tiburon was released in 1996 alongside the 3rd generation Hyundai Sonata.

The 1996 Hyundai Sonata was designed with the American market it mind more than ever. Among other things (European styling, healthy V6, cutting edge safety and performance) the huge selling point for a lot of people was the introduction of the revolutionary 10 year warranty.

The end of the 20th century brought around a lot of revolutionary changes as the Asian Financial Crisis devastated almost all Asian Manufacturers; except for one. Fortunately through smart marketing and some of the best business decisions ever made - Hyundai used it to its advantage to power into the 21st century and become the fastest growing auto manufacturer of the last 10 years.

Beijing Auto Show Technical Videos

As you may or may not know, the Beijing Auto Show was earlier this week, and Hyundai announced several new motor designs. Specifically they are further increasing their GDI technology (already featured on the Sonata) to be included in future Lambda V6 and Gamma 4 cylinder motors. The technological marvels do not stop there however;

The push for efficiency through cutting edge technology does not stop with GDI. The Lambda V6 also features Dual CVVT for optimal camshaft timing throughout the power band, as well as space age low friction PVD coatings on the piston skirts, piston rings and and DVC coatings on the valve tappets. For simplification and weight savings the Lambda V6 will also feature modern composite plastics wherever possible (intake manifold, water housing and rocker cover) as well as an all aluminum block.

The Gamma 1.6 4 cylinder also features a plethora of cutting edge technology include GDI, a timing chain (in place of the traditional timing belt) which increases service life from roughly 100,000 km to a non interval item.
Of course, we are not going to introduce a new engine without our patent CVVT system, but the Gamma 4 will also feature a VIS, variable intake length system, again which adds to fuel efficiency and power.
Taking a queue from its larger Lambda brother, the Gamma also features PVD and DVC coatings where applicable to minimize internal friction and further increase efficiency.

The benefits to a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) system, are numerous, and there are virtually no drawbacks. Ultimately, as a consumer - you are going to see an increase in horsepower, as well as fuel mileage that is made possible by the greater control given to the electronics with Hyundai's GDI System. An unseen advantage is faster catalytic converter light off time, which translates to a cleaner burning car - and keeps the air greener for generations to come, something that North America's Greenest Auto Manufacturer has made clear time and time again, is not something they are willing to sacrifice.

The All New 2011 Sonata is in Our Show Room!

I've spent the last 3 or 4 weeks now, reading all the articles about how great the new Sonata is going to be, and now that it is here, all I can say is....

WOW! Believe the "hype".

When I came to work on Monday we had received our first 2011 Sonata, and it was in the showroom.

I immediately noticed it when I walked in to work Monday morning, and my jaw hit the ground.

All the praise you've been hearing about this vehicle is absolutely 100% true. I personally was, and still am flabbergasted.

It is an absolutely stunning vehicle, the likes of which I personally have never seen before.

Hyundais have always been affordable and reliable, and with the advent of the all new 2010 Genesis, 2010 Tucson and 2011 Sonata - and their awe inspiring "Fluidic Sculpture Design" its very clear to me that they want to be known as stylish and sporty as well.

This is a vehicle that really needs to be seen to be believed. I wish I could tell everyone to come down and see the gorgeous Venetian Red Sonata GLS that we had in our showroom, but someone else fell in love with it already. The 2005 launch of the then all new Hyundai Sonata was a really important stage in Hyundai's life. A number of milestones were realized to coincide with its release, namely Hyundai's first all aluminum motor - the now famous 2.4 litre Theta. Personally, I am anticipating the first in class (ever) standard GDI direction injection system and dual continuously variable valve timing. Using these systems the Sonata is able to achieve a combined 8.2 l / 100km, but do not let its best in class fuel mileage fool you. With 198 tire melting horsepower, and standard 6 speed transmission, it is also the highest rated naturally aspirated 4 cylinder in its segment! Talk about the best of both worlds.

With all this talk about the technical aspects, I don't want you to forget how stylish this vehicle is. The ALL NEW 2010 Hyundai has ARRIVED!

This completely overhaul of the 2010, is Amazing. Using a new Fluidic design from Hyundai's German design team you will notice a continuity from the exterior to the interior that is rarely seen in any other vehicle in this segment.

Having driven it for the last few days I am in complete awe at how wonderfully everything is integrated in this vehicle. From Bluetooth connection, IPOD connectivity, to how well all of the controls are laid out, this Tucson is joy to get into and drive each day.

1st driving impressions are that the Tucson is solid and you always feel in control. Very little body roll, low road noise and good pep out of the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine make for a great road impression.
